Principal Investigator

Stephanie Torres, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and a psychologist. Her program of research focuses on the experiences, ecological risk, and resilience factors among low-income, Latinx communities, particularly Latinx families impacted by immigration-related stress. She hopes to create school-based and community-based programs that promote well-being and mental health. She is the principal investigator for FIESTA, an intervention created with the Resurrection Project (TRP). Her clinical work has focused on addressing trauma exposure and she specializes in serving bilingual, Spanish-speaking families. She is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico and proud to be Latina. She loves to travel to new places and loves cats.

Stephanie Torres, PhD, es una profesora asistente en el Departamento de Psicología Educativa en UIC y una psicóloga. Su programa de investigación se centra en las experiencias de la comunidad latina y maneras en como lidiar con el estrés de ser un inmigrante. Ella espera crear programas basados en la escuela y la comunidad que promuevan el bienestar y la salud mental con un enfoque en resiliencia y las fortalezas culturales entre la comunidad latina. Ella es la investigadora principal de FIESTA, una intervención creada en colaboración con el Proyecto Resurrección (TRP). Ella es hija de inmigrantes de México y orgullosa de ser Latina. A ella le encanta viajar a nuevos lugares y buscar gatos por todos lados. 

Graduate Assistant

Jillian Garcia is a UIC College of Education graduate student in the Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment (MESA) program. They were an elementary bilingual educator in Connecticut for 9 years, have medical training, medicinal biochemical research experience, cellular and molecular biology research experience, and always advocate for the equitable distribution of resources to all community members. Their research includes anti-inflammatory protective factors with Alzheimer’s disease, blood-based biomarkers in maternal obesity, antimicrobial properties of Leisingera, sp. JC1 from bacterial isolates from Hawaiian bobtail squid eggs, and trauma reduction in Latino immigrants using innate resilience factors. They have experience in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and youth participatory action research (YPAR) and want to provide a bridge between academia, medicine, and education to the Latinx community.

Jillian Garcia es una estudiante graduada de la Facultad de Educación de la UIC en el programa de Medición, Evaluación, Estadística y Evaluación (MESA). Elle fue educadore bilingüe de escuela primaria en Connecticut durante 9 años, tiene formación médica, experiencia en investigación bioquímica medicinal, experiencia en investigación en biología celular y molecular, y siempre aboga por la distribución equitativa de los recursos a todos los miembros de la comunidad. Su investigación incluye factores protectores antiinflamatorios con la enfermedad de Alzheimer, biomarcadores basados en la sangre en la obesidad materna, propiedades antimicrobianas de Leisingera, sp. JC1 de aislados bacterianos de huevos de calamar Hawaiano y reducción del trauma en inmigrantes Latinx utilizando factores de resiliencia innatos. Tiene experiencia en Investigación de Acción Participativa Basada en la Comunidad (IAP, CBPR en inglés) e Investigación de Acción Participativa para Jóvenes (YPAR) y quiere proporcionar un puente entre la academia, la medicina y la educación a la comunidad Latinx.

Graduate Assistant

Emilia Roman is a first year PhD student in the Educational Psychology program at UIC. She gradauted from Beloit College with a double major in Psychology and Music. Her previous research as a McNair Scholar focused on intergrating music into the virtual classroom as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She conducted research at the University of Virginia on sleep disparities among sexual minorities. Emilia hopes to continue working with the Latinx community to further explore the role of families in youth’s educational decisions, diversifying music education, and how familial pressures and expectations impact Latinx youth. She is a proud Latina of immigrant parents from Guerrero and Jalisco, Mexico. Emilia enjoys recording songs, watching horror movies, and doing puzzles.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Marlen Saenz-Silva is an undergraduate student who majors in Psychology and double minors in Criminal Justice and Chinese. After receiving her Bachelor’s, she hopes to matriculate in a Ph.D. Clinical Psychology program. To do this, she is a research assistant here at FLOR UIC. Her research interests lie in clinical neuropsychology with a clinical emphasis on child/adult neuropsychology and even forensic psychology. Outside of academics, Marlen is an ABA child therapist where she provides direct services under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Through her work, she hopes to make an impact on the lives of youth, especially marginalized and neglected populations.

Marlen Saenz-Silva es un estudiante de pregrado que se especializa en Psicología con doble subespecialización en Justicia Penal y Chino. Después de recibir su título, espera matricularse en un programa de doctorado en Psicología Clínica. Para ser esto, es asistente de investigación aquí en FLOR UIC. Sus intereses se encuentran en la neuropsicología clínica con énfasis clínico en la neuropsicología adolescente/adulta e incluso psicología forense. Fuera de lo académico, Marlen es terapeuta o técnico conductual de ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). Como técnico conductual, brinda servicios directos bajo la supervisión de un Analista de Comportamiento Certificado. A través de su trabajo, espera tener un impacto en la vida de jóvenes, especialmente en las poblaciones desatendidas. 

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Paula Andrade is a fourth year undergraduate student at UIC majoring in Applied Psychology. She became interested in working with FLOR because of its mission to assist and provide community-based intervention practices for immigrant and vulnerable Latino communities which resonates with her values and goals. In the future, she wishes to either be able to become a family therapist who specializes on latino communities or provide therapy services to women who are struggling with their mental health due to their reproductive challenges. She is a proud Latina from two immigrant parents from Jalisco, Mexico. Paula loves to travel and has been to Mexico, Panama, and Paris before. In her down time, she loves to watch reality tv and enjoy nature via photography.

Paula Andrade es estudiante de quarto año de la carrera de Psicología Aplicada en UIC. Se interesó en trabajar con FLOR debido a su misión de ayudar y proporcionar prácticas de intervención comunitaria para comunidades latinas inmigrantes y comunidades vulnerables. FLOR resuena con sus valores y motivos. En el futuro, ella desea poder convertirse en terapeuta familiar que se especialice en comunidades latinas o brindar servicios de terapia a mujeres que luchan con su salud mental debido a sus problemas reproductivos. Ella es una orgullosa Latina de padres inmigrantes de Jalisco, Mexico. A ella le encanta viajar y ha viajado a México, Panamá y París. En su tiempo libre, a ella le encanta ver reality tv y disfrutar de la naturaleza a través de la fotografía.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Natali Gonzalez-Arenas is an undergraduate student at UIC double majoring in Psychology and Sociology and doing a Certificate for Academic Spanish for Heritage Speakers. Wanting to gain research experience she joined FLOR in hopes to fulfill this, but also to work with the Latino community. She herself comes from immigrant parents and is excited to work with FLOR to get a closer look into the community and their struggles. In the future, she wants to get a Ph.D in Child Clinical Psychology, and help children through tough times. Natali enjoys to read and go out with family and friends. She also enjoys exploring new places and watching movies.

Natali Gonzalez-Arenas es una estudiante en doble carrera de Psicología y Sociología y también haciendo un certificado de español académico para hablantes de herencia. Queriendo ganar experiencia en investigación ella se unió a FLOR con la esperanza de cumplir con esto, pero también para trabajar con la comunidad Latina. Ella viene de padres inmigrantes y está emocionada de trabajar con FLOR para conocer más de cerca a la comunidad y sus luchas. En el futuro, ella quiere obtener un doctorado en Psicología Clínica Infantil y ayudar a los niños en tiempos difíciles. Natali disfruta leer y salir con familia y amigos. También le gusta explorar nuevo lugares y ver películas.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Sebastián García is an undergraduate student at Case Western Reserve University pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience with minors in Public Health and Psychology. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a dual MD/MPH degree and complete a residency in Preventive Medicine. He hopes to translate his academic and clinical experiences into designing community health initiatives that address the unique needs within the Latino community. He is one of four proud sons of immigrant parents from Guanajuato, México and owes much of his success to their selfless sacrifices. Additionally, he is employed as a Clinical Technician at the Cleveland Clinic and also serves as a Resident Assistant at CWRU. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, listening to music, and caring for his hamster.

Sebastián García es un estudiante universitario en Case Western Reserve University, estudiando para obtener una Licenciatura en Ciencias en Neurociencia con especializaciones en Salud Pública y Psicología. Después de graduarse, planea obtener un doble título en MD/MPH y completar una residencia en Medicina Preventiva. Espera utilizar sus experiencias académicas para diseñar iniciativas de salud comunitarias que aborden las necesidades únicas de la comunidad Latino. Es uno de cuatro hijos orgullosos de padres inmigrantes de Guanajuato, México y debe gran parte de su éxito a los sacrificios desinteresados de sus padres. Además, trabaja como Técnico Clínico en la Cleveland Clinic y también es Asistente de Residentes en CWRU. En su tiempo libre, disfruta hacer ejercicio, escuchar música y cuidar a su hámster.

Natalia Orellana is a junior at Emory University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology & Human Biology. As the daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, her passions deeply align with FLOR’s mission to provide community-based support to the Latino population of Chicago. In the future, she plans to pursue a dual MD/MPH degree and continue providing assistance to underserved communities. Outside of academics, Natalia is a certified Spanish medical interpreter who focuses on alleviating healthcare disparities for patients with limited English proficiency. In her free time, she enjoys exploring coffee shops and going to farmer’s markets.

Natalia Orellana es una estudiante de tercer año en la Universidad de Emory, donde está cursando una Licenciatura en Ciencias en Antropología y Biología Humana. Como hija de inmigrantes guatemaltecos, sus pasiones se alinean profundamente con la misión de FLOR de brindar apoyo comunitario a los
población latina de Chicago. En el futuro, planea obtener un título dual de MD/MPH y continuar brindando asistencia a las comunidades desatendidas. Fuera de lo académico, Natalia es una intérprete médica certificada de español que se enfoca en aliviar la atención médica, disparidades para los pacientes con dominio limitado del inglés. En su tiempo libre, le gusta explorar cafeterías e ir a mercados de agricultores.

Diana Espin is a third-year undergraduate student at UIC majoring in Biological Sciences, minoring in Latin American and Latino Studies, and on the Pre-med track. She became interested in helping the Latino community and found FLOR. She has a mission to help find ways to help underserved Latino communities, as it resonates with her personal morals and values. She is a proud Latina from two immigrant parents from Guatemala and Colombia. She loves to hang out with her family and enjoys working as a tumbling coach at a non-profit organization.

Kimberly Rivera is a first-generation college student in her third year as an undergraduate at UIC double majoring in applied psychology and Latino studies. Her primary career goal is to continue advancing her knowledge in psychology through research while working to reduce the stigma around mental health. In the future, she would like to apply for a Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology and work alongside Latino communities to provide bilingual mental health services. She was interested in joining FLOR because she wanted to provide support to the Latino community. In her free time, she volunteers at a hospital, enjoys reading, and listening to music.

Jennifer Ceja is an undergraduate student at UIC majoring in Applied Psychology, and minoring in Sociology. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, in hopes of helping individuals overcome the obstacles that prevent them from leading healthy and productive lives. She became interested in working with FLOR because it aligned with her values of helping others and serving her community. She is a proud daughter of two immigrant parents from Michoacán, Mexico. She understands the struggles that Latinx families face, and hopes to use her background, as well as her research experience, to further advance her skills as a future mental health provider. In her free time, she loves to cook and exercise.

Jonathan Reyes, an undergraduate student at University of Illinois Chicago, studying Psychology with secondary specialization in Education. Post bachelors, he hopes to pursue a masters in Education and be an advocate for voices in marginalized communities who are underrepresented and under-resourced. Joining FLOR, he became interested in learning about research, mainly community based research and the different evidence-based approaches they have to offer. Additionally, he wants to gain more insight into operating different softwares and data integration that promote mental health and brain health. He is the son of immigrant parents from Mexico, knowing their sacrifices and hardships, he plans to be a voice for them. During his free time, he enjoys going on walks at the beach and photographing as his hobby.

Jasmin Flores is an undergraduate student majoring in Applied Psychology and minoring in Criminal Law and Justice. Following graduation, she plans to get a masters in Education and E.d.S in School of Psychology. She plans to help individuals who come from low s.e.s with their mental health, especially in Chicago public schools that have a system that continues to fail children and their families. She comes from two immigrant parents who are from Mexico City, they came to this country to give her and her siblings a better chance at life. She hopes to reach a lot of immigrant Latino families in hopes of helping them become aware of what mental health is and that it is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Furthermore, she wants to be there not only for children in the school system, but also for the parents that don’t understand English, parents that are afraid to ask more questions, and the ones that never got understood as children.

Graduate Research Assistant

Andrea is currently a second-year doctoral student in the clinical psychology program at Loyola University Chicago. Broadly, she is interested in studying trauma exposure among Latine, immigrant, and asylum-seeking/refugee youth. She is interested in understanding the effects of trauma exposure among these populations and better ways to assess complex histories of trauma experienced by these youth. Through this insight, she is interested in developing, assessing, and disseminating accessible interventions that meet the unique needs of these populations, with the ultimate goal of promoting and supporting their resilience and well-being. She is particularly interested in unaccompanied immigrant minors from Central America and hopes to extend her research to policy-driven work.

FLOR Promotora

Celsa Arroyo is a Mexican immigrant mother of two children who has always been involved in her children’s schools. She volunteers with a group for breast cancer survivors: ELLAS. This organization also supports the fight for Empower Illinois state scholarships to continue supporting private schools. Some of her favorite hobbies are gardening, yoga, and meditation. Now, she is very proud to be part of FLOR and the FIESTA program.

Celsa Arroyo es una mamá inmigrante mexicana con dos hijos siempre se a involucrado en las escuelas de sus hijos. Es voluntaria en un grupo de sobrevivientes de cancer de seno ELLAS también apoya la lucha por las becas del estado Empower Illinois para que sigan apoyando las escuelas privadas. Algunos de sus pasatiempos favoritos son hacer jardinería practicar yoga y meditación. Y ahora está muy orgullosa de ser parte del grupo que diseñó el programa FIESTA.

Dolores Contreras, or Lola, has worked with youth in different capacities in the Little Village and West Lawn, as well as surrounding communities; from volunteering, to facilitating, to eventually coordinating youth programming, she has 5+ years of experience working with, by and for youth and the entirety of low-income, immigrant, communities of color. She believes in the importance of opportunities being available for youth, especially those who are at-risk and living in underserved communities; thus, she hopes to continue catering her work for youth and/or community, whether it be administratively or through direct service. She graduated in 2018 from UIC with a Bachelors in English, with a Concentration in Creative Writing, and Sociology. She’s also a (Register Yoga Teacher) RYT-200 and a Licensed Zumba Instructor. She is a proud daughter of immigrant parents who came from Michoacán, Mexico. She enjoys coffee, yoga, singing along to music in car rides, dance parties with her nieces and nephews, writing, traveling with her partner, taking pictures of food and cuddling with her cat, Changa. 

Dolores Contreras, o Lola, ha trabajado con jóvenes en diferentes capacidades en Little Village y West Lawn, así como en las comunidades circundantes; desde el voluntariado hasta la facilitación y, finalmente, la coordinación de la programación juvenil, tiene más de 5 años de experiencia trabajando con, por y para los jóvenes y la totalidad de las comunidades de color, inmigrantes y de bajos ingresos. Ella cree en la importancia de que haya oportunidades disponibles para los jóvenes, especialmente para aquellos que están en riesgo y viven en comunidades desatendidas; por lo tanto, espera continuar brindando su trabajo a la juventud y/o comunidad, ya sea administrativamente o a través del servicio directo. Se graduó en 2018 de la UIC con una Licenciatura en Inglés, con Concentración en Escritura Creativa y Sociología. También es (maestra registrada de yoga) RYT-200 e instructora licenciada de Zumba. Ella es una orgullosa hija de padres inmigrantes que vinieron de Michoacán, México. Le gusta el café, el yoga, cantar con música en los paseos, bailar en fiestas con sus sobrinas y sobrinos, escribir, viajar con su pareja, tomar fotografías de comida y acurrucarse con su gato, Changa.

FLOR Promotora

Maria Ochoa was born in Morelos, Mexico. She is a wife and mother of five children and has lived in Back of the Yards since 1993 when she immigrated to the United States with her husband and one-year-old daughter. Since arriving in the U.S., she has dedicated herself to being a homemaker and has worked mostly night shifts to be able to take care of her children. In 2012, an opportunity presented itself for her to participate in a volunteer parent program at her children’s school called “Padres Mentores.” This started another chapter in her life, and through this program, she has learned many things that have helped her with personal and leadership development in her community. Thanks to this opportunity, she has been able to help others, which she loves doing.

Maria Ochoa nació en México, en el estado de Morelos. Es esposa y madre de 5 hijos y ha vivido en Back of the Yards desde 1993, cuando emigró a EE.UU con su esposo e hija de 1 año. Desde que llegó a los EE.UU, se ha dedicado a ser ama de casa y a trabajar casi siempre en turnos por la noche, porque esto le ha permitido estar pendiente de sus hijos. En 2012, se presentó la oportunidad de participar en un programa para padres voluntarios en la escuela de sus hijos llamado “Padres Mentores”. Desde entonces, ha iniciado otro capítulo en su vida y ha aprendido muchas cosas que le han ayudado en su desarrollo personal y de liderazgo en su comunidad. Gracias a esta oportunidad, ha podido ayudar a otras personas, lo cual le encanta hacer.

Ofelia Carmona, is coordinator of the Parent Mentor Program with The Resurrection Project (TRP) Organization in the Pilsen and Back of the Yards neighborhoods. I am from Guanajuato, Mexico. I like to learn and that other people learn from all the resources that are in our communities. In this FIESTA project, I hope to learn and be able to take in all of the resources and information that will be provided in the different sessions. I like nature and dogs.

Ofelia Carmona, es coordinadora del Programa de Padres Mentores con la Organización de Proyecto Resurrección (TRP) en los vecindarios de Pilsen y las Empacadoras. Soy de Guanajuato, México. Me gusta aprender y que otras personas aprendan de todos los recursos que hay en nuestras comunidades. Actualmente estoy participando en proyecto FIESTA espero aprender y poder llevar este recurso de toda la información que se proveerá en las diferentes sesiones. Me gusta la naturaleza y los perros.
