Society for Community Research and Action

FLOR organized a panel entitled, “Research with Communities, Not on Communities: Using Participatory Methods with Latinx Communities to Achieve Well-Being and Equity”. Dr. Torres collaborated with Jillian Garcia, M.A., Julia Rabin, M.A., Dr. Yolanda Juarez-Balcazar, and Dr. Dana Rusch to discuss how they work with communities to do research with the intention of benefitting the community rather than solely benefitting from the community.

Julia presented the impact of COVID-19 on Latinx communities through a community-led survey that highlights the critical impact of country of origin on experiences of stress due to COVID-19.

Jillian presented how Intervention Mapping (IM) lends itself to harnessing community-academic partnerships by describing the development of a multi-tiered, community-led intervention aimed at reducing stress due to structural racism among Latinx immigrant families.

Yolanda presented the multidimensional stress experienced by Latina mothers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the role of community health workers in supporting their health and well-being.

Dana led a conversation and fielded questions regarding community-engaged research and action and how policy affects our work.

Dr. Torres convened this symposium to show how we are utilizing participatory methods with Latinx communities and engaging community stakeholders as a foundational step to achieving well-being and equity.
